Treatment Overview

Dermal fillers are injectable products used to restore selected areas of facial volume, soften certain folds and refine facial contours. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is the most commonly used dermal filler material in Canada. Different HA fillers have different textures and properties, allowing the product and injection plan to be tailored to the treatment area and desired outcome.

At our Richmond and Mississauga clinics, a qualified healthcare professional reviews your facial anatomy, medical history, previous cosmetic treatments and aesthetic goals before recommending a product and treatment plan. The amount of filler, injection location and expected outcome are individualized rather than based on a standard facial template.

Benefits

Non-surgical treatment customized to facial anatomy

Can restore selected areas of facial volume

Can refine the appearance of the cheeks, lips, chin and jawline

May soften the appearance of certain folds and creases

Results from HA fillers are usually visible shortly after treatment

Different filler properties allow product selection to be tailored to the treatment area

Minimal recovery time for many patients

Results are temporary and can be adjusted through future treatment planning

Some HA fillers may be dissolved with hyaluronidase when clinically appropriate; this does not apply to every injectable product

What to Expect

Duration

Approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on the treatment area and complexity of the treatment plan.

Anesthesia

A topical numbing product or local anaesthetic may be used depending on the treatment area, filler product and individual treatment plan.

Downtime

Minimal, but swelling, tenderness, redness and bruising are common after injection. These reactions may take several days—and occasionally up to approximately two weeks—to settle.

Results

HA filler results are generally visible shortly after treatment, although the treated area should be reassessed after initial swelling has settled. Depending on the product, treatment area and individual factors, results may last from approximately six months to one year or longer.

Recommended Sessions

The number of sessions and amount of product depend on facial anatomy, treatment area, product choice, previous treatments and aesthetic goals. Conservative staged treatment may be recommended rather than completing every correction in one appointment.

Post-Treatment Care

Follow the product-specific instructions provided by your healthcare professional. Avoid pressing, massaging or manipulating the treated area unless instructed. Contact the clinic if swelling, pain, colour changes or another reaction is persistent or worsening.

Seek immediate medical attention for unusual or severe pain, whitening or dusky discoloration of the skin, vision changes, sudden weakness or numbness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe headache, dizziness or confusion.

Aftercare & Recovery

Keep these instructions close after your appointment. The complete guide covers recovery, expected changes, follow-up timing and when to seek medical help.

How it Works

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring component of the skin’s extracellular matrix. HA dermal fillers use injectable gels to add support or volume to selected facial areas. Products vary in firmness, flexibility and intended treatment area.

A qualified healthcare professional selects the product, injection depth and amount according to the patient’s anatomy and treatment goals. Results are generally visible shortly after injection but should be assessed again after swelling has settled.

HA fillers should not be grouped together with every injectable treatment. Radiesse® contains calcium hydroxylapatite, while Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid and produces a more gradual biostimulatory response. Belkyra® is not a filler. These products cannot be assumed to respond to hyaluronidase and should have separate treatment information.

By precisely and safely placing dermal hyaluronic acid gel fillers, such as Restylane®, Radiesse®, Sculptra, BELOTERO®, Belkyra® in facial areas that have lost volume due to ageing, we can help you effectively:

  • Plump your lips

  • Enhance the cheekbones

  • Minimize under eye hollowness

  • Define the jawline

  • Enhance chin

  • Lift the jowls

  • Minimize nasal folds

  • Non-surgical nose job

  • Balance side profile

In case you change your mind, you can opt to reverse the procedure with Hyaluronidase, a magic eraser that dissolves hyaluronic acid.

FAQ

WHAT AREAS CAN DERMAL FILLERS TREAT?

Depending on the product’s approved use and an individual assessment, dermal fillers may be used in areas such as the cheeks, lips, chin, jawline and selected facial folds. Certain areas, including the nose, temples and around the eyes, carry additional risks and require careful assessment by an appropriately trained medical professional.

HA filler results may last approximately six months to one year or longer. Longevity depends on the product, treatment area, amount injected, facial movement and individual metabolism. Results are temporary and vary between patients.

The goal is to create a balanced result that works with your existing facial anatomy. Product selection, placement and amount all affect the outcome. Conservative treatment and staged reassessment may be recommended when a subtle result is preferred.

No. Hyaluronidase may be used to dissolve certain hyaluronic acid fillers when clinically appropriate, but it does not dissolve every filler or injectable product. Radiesse®, Sculptra® and Belkyra® should not be described as reversible with hyaluronidase.

Swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising are common following injection. Many patients continue normal daily activities, but visible swelling or bruising can persist for several days and occasionally longer. Final assessment should wait until the initial swelling has settled.

Reported reactions include pain, swelling, redness, bruising, nodules, infection, allergic reactions, discoloration and improper product placement. Some reactions can persist and may require additional treatment.

Rare but serious vascular complications can occur if filler enters or compresses a blood vessel. These may lead to tissue damage, vision impairment, blindness or stroke. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, skin blanching or discoloration, vision changes or sudden neurological symptoms.

HA fillers add support or volume using hyaluronic acid gel and usually produce an immediate visible change. Radiesse® contains calcium hydroxylapatite, while Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid and produces more gradual biostimulatory changes. The products have different indications, treatment schedules, risks and reversibility, so they should be selected through an individual consultation.
