What to Expect

Pre-Surgery Preparation:

Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with your surgeon to discuss:

In the days leading up to surgery, you may need to:

Stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners
Follow fasting instructions if required for anaesthesia

During the Procedure

Liposuction is performed under:

Local anaesthesia (numbs a specific area) for small procedures
General anaesthesia (puts you to sleep) for larger or multiple areas

The process involves:

Making small incisions in the skin
Inserting a thin tube (cannula) to break down fat
Suctioning out the fat using a vacuum or syringe
Closing the incisions (some may be left open for drainage)

How it Works

Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Here’s a simplified breakdown of the process:

Tumescent Liposuction: In most cases, a tumescent solution is first injected into the targeted area. This solution contains lidocaine (a numbing agent), saline (saltwater), and epinephrine (a medication that constricts blood vessels). This helps reduce bleeding, pain, and swelling during the procedure.
Fat Removal: A thin, hollow tube called a cannula is then inserted through small incisions in the skin. The cannula is connected to a surgical vacuum that suctions out the liquefied fat cells.
Body Contouring: Depending on the technique used, the surgeon may use the cannula to carefully sculpt and refine the treated area to achieve the desired body contour.

SmartLipo Laser Assisted

Dr. Rice is the first plastic cosmetic surgeon in Canada to offer laser liposuction. Dr. Rice has also lectured on the technique and benefits of laser liposuction to other surgeons. SmartLipo™ differs from traditional liposuction in that the fat is easily melted by the laser. The laser also helps to coagulate small blood vessels, therefore resulting in decreased bruising. Laser liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that employs the amazing power and versatility of lasers to melt away fat. By using a single laser fiber to heat and disintegrate fat cells inside the body, SmartLipo™ produces significantly less bleeding, bruising, and trauma than traditional liposuction, resulting in far shorter recovery times. Laser liposuction is best for treating localized fatty deposits in patients who are in generally good health and has the added benefit of improving skin firmness by boosting tissue coagulation, further enhancing the surgeon’s ability to reshape and sculpt the area.

Body Jet Water Liposuction

Dr Rice is proud to be the first plastic surgeon in Canada to introduce Body Jet Water liposuction into his practice. This revolutionary water assisted liposuction technique represents the latest in liposuction technology. It can be applied to multiple areas of the body at the same time and reduce the sometimes lumpy texture associated with the traditional tumescent infiltration technique, and all without the pain and bruising found in standard liposuction procedures. The Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction technique was developed to avoid the problems associated with tumescent infiltration used in standard liposuction procedures.

Tumescent infiltration causes tissue swelling which lowers operative accuracy and can result in serious side affects. Body-Jet Liposuction gently washes away the fat without traumatizing other structures such as blood vessels and nerves. Water-Jet liposuction has shown to be clearly superior to traditional methods because of the dramatically reduced session length and less pain. With Body-Jet Liposuction less manual pressure is needed to remove the fat and thus a simple local anesthetic can be used.

Slim Lipo Laser Assisted

Dr. Rice is proud to be the first plastic surgeon in Canada to offer slim lipo. Dr. Rice and his premier liposuction surgery clinic in Toronto have been selected by manufacturers of slim lipo to be the Canadian training facility for laser assisted liposuction by slim lipo.

Slim laser lipo is the latest in laser assisted liposuction procedures. It offers both an improved tightening effect than older lasers as well as a faster recovery time and less bruising. This amazing combination has allowed many liposuction patients to return to work in record times – sometimes on the same day. Furthermore, skin tightening and smoothing effects of slim lipo are unseen with older laser assisted liposuction devices. What is liposuciton?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure intended to remove excess fatty tissue from beneath the skin in order to slim, sculpt, and rejuvenate specific areas of the body. The Liposuction procedure is most commonly used to remove unwanted fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, upper arms, and buttocks. In liposuction, a surgeon makes a small incision in the skin and inserts a thin metal tube that is then used to break up and suction out fatty tissue. SmartLipo™ uses a laser rather than suction to eliminate fat beneath the skin. Typically, as many as 10 pounds of fat can be removed using liposuction.

Are there risks to having liposuction or SmartLipo™?

Just like any surgical procedure, liposuction and SmartLipo™ do carry some risks. Infection, bleeding, and nerve damage may occur, and since liposuction removes fatty tissue from the body, the threat of losing too much fluid is also a possible risk of the surgery. If not treated, fluid loss can lead to shock, so liposuction patients should be especially careful to monitor their fluid levels during recovery after the procedure. Other possible risks of liposuction include the development of blood and fat clots, friction burns on the skin, and harmful drug reactions.
